In this workshop we will explore familiar movements on unfamiliar apparatus. If you’ve ever thought about expanding your aerial repertoire, come experiment with us! This workshop will jumpstart your creativity in the air by allowing students access to Duo Avium’s wide range of aerial apparatus, including: chains, slammock, aerial “8”, cat lyra, and silk chandelier. We will explore your existing vocabulary on these apparatus and help you to discover new movement and ways of thinking about aerial. We hope to guide and inspire you to begin to think outside the box of traditional aerial apparatus as well as inspire new movement pathways and thought.
Come solo or with your aerial partner. If you are interested in working on chains, you must bring leather gloves and closed-toes shoes (bonus opportunities if you bring stiletto boots!).
Must be able to perform three unassisted pull-ups and unassisted inversions. Must have knowledge of basic climbs on silks/rope and some prior aerial experience on silks and/or lyra.
About the Instructor:
Duo Avium is Megan Hornady and Nolan McKew.
Megan's background is in classical ballet and trained in aerial arts with Rachel Bowman (Cirque du Soleil), and in contortion with Jonathan Nosan (SF Circus School). She specializes in silks, lyra, cloudswing, and chains. She has performed at The Box, Webster Hall, House of Yes, Soho House, Lavo, Cipriani's, Soho Grand, and at corporate & private events across the country. She has done concert/touring/ commercial work for Lionel Richie, Paul McCartney, Ultra Music Festival, Beyonce, Target, Kohl's, and Bandier, as well as performing & choreographing for Lady Gaga's ArtRave.
She currently performs with her aerial partner, Nolan McKew, and choreographs for her aerial dance company Animal Mechanical. Megan has been teaching and coaching aerial for the past 6 years in NYC. With eternal gratitude to her teachers, she hopes to give her students the opportunity to dance in the air, develop their own personal style, and to impart her deep love of aerial arts to anyone who has the desire to fly.
Nolan is from Pinehurst, North Carolina and is a performer in aerial arts, music (classical piano, voice), dance (ballet, modern, jazz), and theater. He's worked with Lady Gaga, Chris Brown, Comedy Central, 50 Shades! the Musical, Westchester Ballet Theatre, and events at NYC venues such as Hammerstein Ballroom, Cipriani's, the Downtown Association, and Terminal 5.
Nolan loves creating new aerial choreography and sequencing for solo & duo work, as well as helping develop students' understanding of how to move through aerials efficiently and with a more striking visual performance.
